I adore Billie Edwards. She emits this raw honesty — the kind that all good and true art is comprised of. She uses the body as a vulnerable channel for creativity, held within the breast of "the divine and wonderful Mama Earth". Her essence is that of immeasurable textures, colors, techniques, sentiments. Her alignment is rooted in elemental wisdom, cultural nourishment. Read a few of her wise words below . . .
What environment do you hail from?
"Northern Rivers, NSW, Australia. I’m from a very small sleepy beach town right next to the ocean, and I think my personality reflects this. Overtime I’ve moved to a city and abroad to India — but I always keep coming back to the Byron Shire, by the sea. How has my hometown impacted me . . . I think it’s engraved the desire to be within nature whenever I can / made me a permanently sleepy person."
What is your work? What in your personal life has influenced that?
"I freelance in fashion & marketing . . . so a little bit of social media creation, styling, photography, graphic design & writing. I’m about to start fashion buying. And I model sometimes too. When you put it in a list like that, it honestly sounds much more impressive then it is…really these things just kind of mould together naturally.
Personal life has lead me down this path, for sure. Growing up by the sea, I have always been obsessed with the divine and wonderful Mama Earth — and you can see this influence in my aesthetic, and the brands who I now work with align with this aesthetic. You know that old horrible saying ‘it’s who you know’ — I guess I also found it to become true. Along the way I have met great people, who I have become genuine friends with. These friends have taught me different mediums, and lead me down different paths and opened doors. It’s a lovely thing working with friends, I am constantly surrounded by people I want to be surrounded with. Life (and work) is just a lovely long path. When and if things are meant to be, they will be."
What do you currently feel compelled to create?
"All my creative outlets are very digital in my life right now. I want to find time to go back to craft. I love traditional textile methods like weaving and block printing. I need to go back and visit this. I’m not naturally good with my hands. I’m impatient. It’s something I need to become better at."
What ignites your soul?
"Outside! The ocean, earth and mountains. Colour and texture. The cosmos and the sun. Finding new natural forms I have never seen. Learning about other ways of life and traditions, completely opposite to my own. Culture shock. Being put outside the old comfy comfort zone."
Rituals?
"Coffee and napping are daily. And when life is flowing well, swimming in the sea and being surrounded by warm, happy, bright and charming humans who like dancing to same music as me."
What does "Beauty" mean to you?
"Raw and unaltered.
I think people and the earth are so beautiful in their most natural form . . . without unnecessary buildings or cosmetics. It’s unfortunate how we always wish to change things, alter them to become ‘more’ beautiful . . . a bad habit humans have. I guess to me, beauty means honesty."
